My body rested on the ground and my eyes remained glued to the door

My body rested on the ground and my eyes remained glued to the door. I wasn't sure how long I'd been in the all-white room, but hardly anyone came inside. Hardly anyone except Slater.

The man was almost always here. Sometimes he didn't talk — sometimes he'd just come and sit with me. It didn't matter how much I'd growl at him, he still came back. So when the door began to open today, I expected no difference.

But today it wasn't Slater.

The door slowly opened revealing a blonde-haired woman, she wore glasses and attempted to offer me a smile but my eyes were focused on something else. More specifically, her white coat and the bag in her arm.

My body tensed up, ears pinned back, eyes hardened into a glare, and I snarled. The woman seemed unfazed though.

"Hello there," she greeted in a calm tone. Her feet began to move toward me so I growled at her once again. The woman stopped and stared at me almost amusedly. "So you're not going to let me get closer?"

No, bitch.

"Alpha Slater sent me here to come and check up on you," my ears perked at the mention of Slater and the woman grinned. My eyes narrowed at her when she tried to move once again. "I have to give you a check-up," the woman tried to explain.

Once she realized I wasn't going to let her get close to me, the woman sighed and left the room. I expected her to come back, but hours passed and she didn't reappear.

When the door finally did open again, it wasn't the woman from before or Slater. It was food time, the happiest part of my day. A man brought a plate in and set it on the ground by the door before shutting it. I immediately moved towards the plate of what appeared to be chicken and began to eat it.

The chicken tasted weird, but I shrugged it off. By the time I was done eating, my body was practically swaying from side to side.

What was wrong with me?

The door opened again and the woman from earlier along with a few others entered the room. I attempted to growl at them, but it came out more as a strangled whine.

"You're going to be alright," the woman promised and rubbed my head.

If I didn't feel sick, I would've bit her hand off.

I could feel my body being lifted off the floor as we exited the room. I tried to stay awake to see where they were taking me, but the harder I tried, the stronger the need to sleep grew until my eyes finally shut and I let the darkness overtake me.

...

I'm not sure how long I was out, but when I finally came to, I was no longer in the same room as before.

"I told you to move them, not scare them more than they already were," an angry voice chastised and I almost immediately recognized whose it was.

Slater?

"They weren't going to come willingly, alpha," someone said.

"Then you should've left him and I would've come after. Nobody permitted you to drug them and to put them in a cage — especially knowing what type of situation they just came from!" Slater growled, his voice full of anger. Slater let out a sigh and I could hear him moving around. "Get out, we will talk later."

I could hear the sound of footsteps leaving the room, but my eyes remained focused on the blurry figure approaching me. I let out a growl of my own and blinked rapidly to try and clear my vision. When I opened my eyes, Slater was crouching in front of the cage I had been stuffed into. A frown formed on his face and his hands unlocked the cage. The moment I was out, I immediately launched myself out of him and my teeth sank into his arm.

I knew he couldn't be trusted.

I expected him to retaliate in some manner, but Slater didn't move. Instead, he brought his other hand around and ran it through my wolf's coat causing me to tense up. I bit down harder, but he still didn't seem to care.

"I'm sorry you were drugged and put in a cage, mate," Slater said. "I needed to get you out of the hospital room to clear up some space, but clearly that didn't go so well. I'm sorry I wasn't there."

Though his words sounded sincere, I still didn't trust him. The last time I trusted someone, I ended up in that fucking fighting ring. People tried to sound sincere and then they stabbed you in the back.

I wasn't going to get stabbed in the back again.

My grip on his arm didn't loosen, but my eyes traveled around the new room. It was much different from the one I was kept in before. Where that room was mostly white with little to nothing around it, this room was bigger. There was a bed in the center with two side tables beside it. Dressers were against the wall and there was another door that was closed.

Was this his bedroom?

It had been years since I last saw a bedroom. The sight almost felt foreign now. The only "bedroom" I was used to was my cell.

The room still felt relatively empty, but if it was Slater's room then it made sense. Slater didn't seem like the person to have a lot of clutter around his room.

With one last glance at him, I let Slater's arm go and slowly began to make my way around the room. I could feel Slater's eyes on me, but he didn't say anything so I ignored him and continued to sniff. As expected, Slater's scent was all over the room, but I actually didn't mind it.

Slater stood up causing my head to snap to him. He slowly made his way toward me before crouching down and running his hand through my fur again.

"I hope you like this room better than the last room you were inside of," he said, but my attention was no longer focused on him.

Instead, my eyes were glued to the bed. The bed looked very comfortable. It had been years since I last been on one and the sight of it made me happier than it should've.

I think I'll like it just fine.
