Veronica stood before the full-length mirror, her reflection a vision of calculated confidence. She adjusted the black fur coat draped over her shoulders, the plush fabric a dramatic contrast to the vibrant red of her bustier dress. The intricate lace of her tights peeked from beneath the hem, leading down to the sharp, defiant curve of her black stilettos. She secured a delicate gold necklace, then ran a hand over her sleek, dark hair, satisfied. Tonight, she wouldn't just make an entrance; she'd make a statement.
"Veronica! Are you coming downstairs?" her mother's voice echoed from the foyer, a blend of impatience and anticipation.
"Coming!" Veronica called back, grabbing her small red clutch.
As she descended the grand staircase, her eyes immediately landed on a tall, familiar figure standing beside her parents. "Jack!" she shrieked, breaking into a delighted run. She launched herself into his arms, burying her face in his shoulder. "Oh my god, I've missed you so much! Why didn't you tell me you were here?"
Jax chuckled, wrapping her in a tight hug. His southern drawl was a comforting balm. "I wanted to surprise you, V. Just got in about two hours ago. Wanted to get settled into the hotel first."
Veronica pulled back, a slight frown creasing her brow. "Hotel? I thought you were staying with us!"
He shrugged, a charming, easy smile playing on his lips. "I saw a place that looked great. Figured I'd try it out.". "The Bass hotel, actually. Empire, I think it's called?"
Veronica's mother exchanged a knowing glance with Veronica, both uttering in unison, "Of course it is." A shared, wry amusement passed between them.
Just then, Veronica's father strode into the foyer, his own smile broadening at the sight of Jack. "Great to see you, son!" he boomed, clapping Jack on the shoulder. "But as much as I'd love to catch up, we really have to get going. Wouldn't want to miss Lily's big night."
The limo pulled up to the gallery, and a frenzy of camera flashes erupted. Veronica stepped out, radiant in her red gown and black fur, a collective gasp from the paparazzi mingling with their shouts of "Veronica!" She smiled, a confident, knowing curve of her lips, her hand finding Jack as he emerged behind her. The flashes intensified, capturing the stunning duo.
Inside, Blair and Serena, already mingling, watched Veronica's entrance, their eyes wide with surprise at the sight of Jack. Chuck Bass, usually the picture of detached cool, paused mid-conversation with Phoebe, his dark eyes narrowing on Veronica's triumphant entrance, then flicking to Jack with a possessive glint that spoke volumes. The smile he offered Phoebe seemed to strain at the corners.
Veronica, oblivious or simply uncaring of Chuck's simmering reaction, moved through the room with effortless grace, introducing Jack to everyone as a "dear old friend from home." She made sure his presence was noted.
Her gaze finally landed on the Hayes family across the room. Phoebe's jaw dropped, her parents' polite smiles instantly dissolving into stark panic as they recognized Jack. Veronica linked her arm through his, leading him directly towards them, her own smile sweet and deceptively innocent.
"Mr. and Mrs. Hayes! Phoebe!" Veronica chirped, her voice just loud enough. "What a truly wonderful exhibition. I just had to call Jack to visit us while he was in town. Hope I don't bother you all by bringing him along?"
Mrs. Hayes' face paled. "Of course not, Veronica," she managed, her voice strained. She leaned in, a desperate whisper escaping her lips. "Jack, please. Can we keep everything calm tonight? This is all to pay your parents back."
Jack offered a slow, saccharine smile, his eyes sparkling with a subtle, dangerous amusement. "Don't you worry, Mrs. Hayes," he drawled, his Southern charm thick with sarcasm. "Everything's going to be perfectly calm."
