The final bell rang, and the hallways exploded into their usual chaotic mess of chatter, slamming lockers, and hurried footsteps. I was stuffing my books into my backpack when Scott sidled up beside me, grinning like he'd just aced a test.
"Hey, you want to come over?" he asked, leaning against the locker next to mine.
I hesitated, fumbling with the zipper. "Uh, can't. I have to... do something with my dad."
Scott raised an eyebrow. "What kind of something? Can i come?"
I laughed nervously, slinging my bag over my shoulder. "I wish you could, but its just dad and son night i guess. Super boring. You'd hate it." I lied
Scott shrugged. "Fair enough. Is Matt picking you up today?"
My stomach did a nervous flip. "Yeah."
His eyes lit up. "Cool! Maybe I'll finally meet him."
Panic flared in my chest. "Oh, yeah, totally," I said, my voice cracking just a little. "But, uh, you'll probably miss the bus if you wait for him."
Scott frowned, glancing at the clock on the wall. "Crap, you're right. I am not walking home again. My feet still hurt from this morning."
"Exactly," I said, clapping him on the shoulder. "And if you're late, Allison might think you're blowing her off or something. Can't have that, right?"
Scott chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah, she'd kill me. Alright, you're off the hook this time. But I am meeting Matt eventually, dude. No more dodging."
I forced a laugh, my palms suddenly sweaty. "Sure thing. One day."
Scott waved as he jogged toward the bus line, leaving me standing there with my heart racing.
I let out a long breath, adjusting my backpack and heading for the parking lot. My mind was spinning as I stepped outside and spotted Matt's car parked by the curb. He was leaning casually against the driver's side door, looking effortlessly cool as always, his sunglasses pushed up onto his head and his signature smirk in place.
"Hey," he called out when he saw me, his grin widening.
"Hey," I replied, climbing into the passenger seat as he slid behind the wheel.
"Everything okay?" he asked, glancing at me as he started the car.
"Yeah, fine," I said quickly, though my hands were fidgeting with the strap of my bag.
He shot me a skeptical look but didn't press. "Alright, where to? Your place?"
"Yeah," I said, leaning back in the seat and closing my eyes for a moment.
As Matt drove, I couldn't help but think about Scott. The thought of his reaction when he finds out made my stomach churn.
"Hey," Matt said, his voice cutting through my spiraling thoughts. "You sure you're okay? You seem... tense."
I opened my eyes and glanced at him, offering a weak smile. "I'm good. Just a long day."
He didn't look convinced, but he let it drop, turning the radio up slightly as we cruised through town.
As we pulled into my driveway, I glanced out the window and sighed in relief.
As soon as we got to my room, I tossed my backpack onto the floor and sat down on the edge of the bed, trying not to fidget. Matt followed, lounging casually like he belonged there. He tilted his head, watching me with that infuriatingly perceptive look of his.
"You're acting weird," he said, his brows knitting together. "What's up?"
I forced a grin, trying to play it off. "You know, you never told me your full name. Like, I don't even know your last name. What if you're secretly a serial killer? It's like... Matthew what? Matthew Smith? Johnson?"
